Open, streams or apps
I like the culture of open problems and challenges to draw out the talented (shy and recluse, or just normal) researchers.
- Piotr Indyk, Andrew McGregor, Ilan Newman and Krzysztof Onak have a nice list of open problems in data streams research. The list has concrete, technical open problems and avoids wordy discussion of novel research directions.
- The FCC challenges researchers and software developers to engage in research and create apps that help consumers foster, measure, and protect Internet openness. A few interesting apps among the submissions, even though they sound researchy.

Why is "wordy discussion of novel research directions" a problem? - this is an honest question, I'm not trying to be rhetoric.
I know a lot of people who prefer crisp open problems with a bound to shoot for, I was steering them to the open problems list.
Personally, I am more likely to write "wordy discussion of novel research directions", and I believe I have. :)
